2008 Riesling Fellowship Celebrates Rieslings from Around the World

Event Hosted by Wines of Germany with Support from the International Riesling Foundation and the Institute of Masters of Wine (North America)

December1, 2008 (New York, NY) - The first international Riesling Fellowship to take place in the United States occurs today at the Mandarin Oriental Hotel. Wines of Germany, as part of its Destination Riesling marketing campaign, hosts the event, which has been held annually in London since 2006. With support from the International Riesling Foundation and the Institute of Masters of Wine (North America), the Riesling Fellowship consists of multiple activities: a seminar on how Riesling ages, moderated by Charles Curtis, Master of Wine and Head of Christie’s Wine Sales, North America, a luncheon with top Riesling producers and a trade tasting.  Today, guests will have the opportunity to taste the wines of 60 different producers from eight countries across the globe.

“As sixty percent of the world’s Riesling grapes grow in Germany, we’re delighted to co-host the first Riesling Fellowship in the United States,” said Steffen Schindler, Director of Marketing of the Deutsches Weininstitut.  “It’s a great opportunity to see how talented Riesling producers from around the globe interpret the varietal.”

The event begins with a seminar from 10:00 am – 12:00 pm on how Riesling ages.  The seminar will focus on what causes Riesling to improve throughout the years with a special emphasis on the effects of terroir. Twelve international producers will participate as panelists and guide attendees through a tasting of older vintages.   A luncheon with courses that complement Riesling follows the seminar.  From 2:00 – 4:00 pm, a larger audience of trade and media guests will participate in a wine tasting from 60 leading Riesling producers.
